At the confluence of Turtle Creek and the Rock River, from about 1822-1832, there was a very large Ho-Chunk settlement called Ke-Chunk (Kečąk) or Turtle Village. The land they lived on is now an environmental learning, Nature At The Confluence. When I was executive director at Nature At The Confluence I created this video that honors the people that lived there. You can learn more about Ke-Chunk Village and the Ho-Chunk people at this link at Nature At The Confluence: https://natureattheconfluence.com/land-acknowledgement/
“Ke-Chunk Remembrance”
They heard the same bird song.
They watched the same waters flow by.
They loved this land as we do.
And, through this land we are bound to them.
We honor their history,
We respect their lives,
We will tell their story,
We will remember them.
